As the weather continues to be hot and more and more people are taking to the water it is advisable to take a moment to learn what to do should you suddenly find yourself struggling.
Your instinct would tell you to swim hard. But cold water shock could make you gasp uncontrollably. You could then breathe in water and drown.
The RNLI is urging everyone to remember that if you get into trouble in the water, Float to Live.
5 steps to know how to float
– Tilt your head back with ears submerged
– Relax and try to control your breathing- Move your hands to help you stay afloat- Once you are over the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety- In an emergency call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
